· Policy implementation basis: "Regulations of the People's Republic of China on the Administration of Entry and Exit of Foreigners" and "Measures for the Administration of Visa-Free Transit for Foreigners in China";
· Key adjustment content: Merge the original 72-hour visa-free policy into the 240-hour policy, expand the activity scope of 240-hour visa-free from "9 cities in the Greater Bay Area" to "the entire administrative region of Guangdong Province", and add 5 entry-exit ports in Guangdong Province.
2. Coverage Scope Overview
· Eligible ports in Guangzhou: 3 designated ports (Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, Guangzhou Pazhou Ferry Terminal, Guangzhou Nansha Ferry Terminal), all equipped with dedicated visa-free transit channels and multilingual service personnel;
· Policy coverage groups: Citizens of all countries and regions (24-hour policy), citizens of 54 countries (144-hour policy), citizens of 55 countries (240-hour policy), covering most developed and developing countries in Europe, America, Asia, and Oceania;

· Flexible travel arrangements: 144-hour/240-hour visa-free allows free travel across cities, facilitating in-depth tourism and business activities;
· Simplified customs clearance procedures: Dedicated channels, intelligent customs clearance equipment, and average customs clearance time shortened to 5-10 minutes;
· Comprehensive supporting services: Multilingual guidance, special care for special groups, and perfect connection of transportation, accommodation, and medical services.
Visa-Free Transit Policies for Guangzhou Layover
24-Hour Visa-Free Transit
All open ports of entry in China implement a 24-hour transit visa-free policy for citizens of all countries. Foreign nationals holding valid international travel documents and confirmed onward tickets who are transiting through China to a third country or region by international aircraft, ship, or train, and whose stay in China does not exceed 24 hours and who do not leave the designated port area, are exempt from visa requirements. If they need to leave the designated port area, they must apply for a temporary entry permit from the bord30-40 minuteser inspection authorities at the port of entry.
1. Official Definition
Foreign travelers holding valid international travel documents (passport valid for at least 3 months) and confirmed connecting tickets with fixed dates and seats for a third country/region (round trips to the same country are invalid) may stay visa-free for up to 24 hours when transiting through Guangzhou.
2. Eligibility
· Basic scope: Citizens of all countries and regions in the world, including countries not covered by the 144-hour/240-hour visa-free policy (such as India, Pakistan, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Nepal, etc.);
· Special group restrictions: Foreigners with a history of illegal stay in China (within 5 years) are not eligible; foreigners who have been deported or repatriated are not eligible within the restricted period;
· Entry purpose restriction: Only for transit purposes, not for tourism, business, or other purposes outside the port restricted area.
3. Stay Rules
· Calculation standard: Strictly calculated from the exact time of entry (minute by minute), based on the time stamped on the entry inspection seal in the passport;
· Example illustration: If you enter at 14:30 on January 21, you must complete the departure procedures and board the plane before 14:30 on January 22. Even if you depart at 14:31, it will be regarded as an overstay;
· Overstay consequences: Record the violation in the entry-exit credit system; fine of 500 yuan per day (minimum 500 yuan); affect future visa applications for China (may be refused or granted a short-term visa with restrictions);
· Time extension regulations: It is not allowed to extend the stay time under any circumstances, even in special cases such as flight delays (only temporary stay in the port restricted area can be applied for, and the departure must be completed within 24 hours).
4. Application Process & Materials
*Basic materials:
· Valid international travel document (passport): Valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry, no missing pages, no serious damage (such as tearing, smudging of photos), and the photo on the passport must be clear and consistent with the actual appearance;
· Confirmed connecting tickets: Airplane, ship, or train tickets are acceptable, with fixed seats and clear itinerary. The ticket must clearly show the transit route of "Third country/region - China (Guangzhou) - Another third country/region" (Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan regions of China are regarded as "third regions", so the route of "Hong Kong - Guangzhou - Macao" is also eligible);
· Entry/Exit Registration Form: English version is available at the border inspection window, and the content must be filled in truthfully (name, nationality, passport number, entry-exit time, destination, etc.), with a signature (consistent with the signature on the passport).
*Materials for specific groups of people:
· Minors under 16 years old: Birth certificate (English version, with notarization if necessary), guardian's passport (original and copy), and guardian's power of attorney (if the guardian is not accompanying, it must be notarized);
· Tourists with special identities: Diplomats need to provide official diplomatic certificates; crew members need to provide crew certificates and flight mission certificates;
· Tourists with disabilities: Disabled person certificate (English version) can be provided to apply for priority customs clearance services.
*Material verification precautions:
· Electronic tickets are acceptable, but it is recommended to print the paper version (with clear QR code and flight information) for verification;
· The name on the ticket must be completely consistent with the name on the passport (including the order of first name and last name, no typos);
· If the materials are incomplete or unqualified, the border inspection officer has the right to refuse the visa-free transit application, and the tourist needs to go through the visa formalities or return on the original flight.
5. Application for Temporary Exit from Restricted Area
*Applicable scenarios (only for emergencies):
· Emergency medical treatment: Sudden illness requiring urgent treatment outside the port (such as acute heart disease, severe trauma);
· Urgent document handling: Loss of key documents (such as passport, connecting ticket) that need to be handled at the embassy/consulate or relevant institutions outside the port;
· Other force majeure: Special circumstances such as natural disasters and public security incidents that require evacuation from the port.
*Application materials:
· Written application: English version, clearly stating the reason for exit, destination (specific address), return time (must be within 24 hours of entry), and contact information;
· Original passport and copy of connecting ticket;
· Supporting materials for emergency reasons: Hospital emergency notice (English version), embassy/consulate notice, disaster certificate, etc.;
· Guarantee materials: If applicable, a guarantee letter issued by the airline or travel agency (English version) can be provided to increase the approval rate.
*Application process:
· Step 1: Go to the special window for temporary exit application at the border inspection area of the port (marked with "Temporary Exit Application" in English);
· Step 2: Submit all application materials and accept the inquiry from the border inspection officer;
· Step 3: The border inspection department reviews (30-60 minutes), and issues a "Temporary Exit Permit" if approved;
· Step 4: Return to the port restricted area within the specified time, return the "Temporary Exit Permit", and complete the departure procedures.
*Precautions for approval:
· The approval rate is not 100%, and it is only approved in special emergency scenarios;
· Those who fail to return within the specified time will be regarded as illegal stay, and the penalty will be heavier than ordinary overstay;
· During the temporary exit period, it is not allowed to go beyond the declared destination, and the movement trajectory must be recorded (such as taking a taxi with a meter and keeping the invoice).
6. Key Notes
If travelers need to leave the airport restricted area due to special circumstances, they must apply for a temporary entry permit at the airport border inspection office and provide relevant supporting documents.

It is the most commonly used policy for foreign tourists transiting through Guangzhou for short trips.
1. Policy Positioning
Implemented since May 1, 2019, it is a key upgraded visa-free transit policy in Guangdong Province. It expands the stay duration and entry-exit ports on the basis of the 72-hour policy, further facilitating transit travelers' in-depth visits and business activities in Guangdong.

· Tourists whose entry purpose is inconsistent with the declared purpose (such as declaring tourism but actually engaging in paid work).
3. Duration of Stay
· Calculation standard: Calculated from 00:00 on the day after entry, ending at 24:00 on the 6th day (144 hours in total), regardless of the specific entry time on the day of entry;

*Extension regulations:
· Only allowed to extend in special circumstances (flight delay, sudden illness, natural disaster), and the extension period is 1-3 days (subject to official approval);
· Application materials for extension: Written application (English version), passport, visa-free permit, supporting materials (flight delay certificate, medical certificate), etc.;

4. Activity Scope

It is strictly prohibited to travel to cities outside the Greater Bay Area (such as Chaozhou, Shantou, Zhanjiang in Guangdong Province). For example, traveling from Guangzhou to Chaozhou during the 144-hour stay period is regarded as a violation.
5. Core Requirements
· Valid passport with a validity period of at least 3 months from the date of entry;
· Confirmed connecting tickets (air, cruise, etc.) with fixed dates and seats for a third country/region within 144 hours, with different departure and destination countries/regions;

· Strictly prohibited: Paid work (including part-time jobs, online freelance work, paid performances), academic research (without official approval), news interviews (without relevant permits), and other activities that require prior approval. For example, participating in a paid commercial performance in Guangzhou during the stay period is a serious violation.
240-Hour Visa-Free Transit
The most flexible and inclusive visa-free transit policy in Guangzhou, applicable to citizens of 55 countries. It was upgraded and expanded in November 2025, adding 5 entry ports including Guangzhou Pazhou Ferry Terminal. It allows a 10-day stay in the entire administrative region of Guangdong Province, which is suitable for tourists who want to have an in-depth trip across multiple cities in Guangdong.
1. Eligibility
Citizens of 55 countries, covering 40 European countries, 6 American countries, 2 Oceanian countries, and 7 Asian countries. The specific list is as follows:
· Europe (40 countries): Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Monaco, Russia, United Kingdom, Ireland, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, Belarus, Norway;

· Asia (7 countries): South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Brunei, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Indonesia.
2. Duration of Stay
Calculated from 00:00 on the day after entry, with a maximum stay of 240 hours (10 full days). For example, if you enter on January 21, the stay period starts at 00:00 on January 22 and ends at 24:00 on January 31. Compared with the 144-hour policy, it provides 4 more days of stay, which is more suitable for in-depth travel in Guangdong Province (such as traveling from Guangzhou to Chaozhou, Shantou, Huizhou, etc.).
3. Activity Scope
Entire administrative region of Guangdong Province, including all 21 prefecture-level cities in Guangdong (Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Zhaoqing, Huizhou, Chaozhou, Shantou, Jieyang, Shanwei, Meizhou, Shaoguan, Qingyuan, Yunfu, Zhaoqing, Yangjiang, Maoming, Zhanjiang). You can take any public transport (high-speed rail, bus, ferry) to travel between cities, but you must not leave Guangdong Province (such as going to Guangxi, Hunan and other provinces).
4. Application Documents
· Valid international travel document (passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry).
· Connecting tickets with confirmed dates and seats within 240 hours (airplane, ship, or train tickets are acceptable; paper or electronic tickets are allowed, printed copies recommended for backup).
5. Permitted Activities
Short-term activities such as tourism, business, visits, and family reunions. Activities requiring prior approval (e.g., work, study, news interviews) must apply for a visa.
6. Entry Ports
Designated ports in Guangdong Province, including Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, Guangzhou Pazhou Ferry Terminal, etc.
7. Entry/Exit Ports
As of November 2025, there are 65 designated open ports nationwide, including 5 ports in Guangdong Province newly added: Guangzhou Pazhou Ferry Terminal, Hengqin Port, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Port, Zhongshan Port, and Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High-Speed Rail West Kowloon Station. The main entry ports in Guangzhou are:
· Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (the most commonly used port for air transit tourists);
· Guangzhou Pazhou Ferry Terminal (adjacent to the Canton Fair Pavilion, a key channel for foreign merchants, with intelligent customs clearance channels <superscript:7]);
· Guangzhou Nansha Ferry Terminal (supporting ferry routes to Hong Kong and Macao).
8. Permitted & Prohibited Activities
· Permitted: Short-term tourism, business visits, academic exchanges (with official approval), family visits, participation in exhibitions (such as the Canton Fair), etc.;
· Prohibited: Paid work, unauthorized academic research, news interviews without permits, illegal employment, etc. It should be noted that if you need to participate in academic exchanges, you must provide the invitation letter from the relevant unit in China to the border inspection officer for verification.
72-Hour Visa-Free Transit (Discontinued)
In order to optimize the visa-free transit policy system and provide foreign tourists with longer stay time and wider activity scope, the original 72-hour visa-free transit policy has been officially merged into the 240-hour policy since November 2025. It is no longer independently implemented in Guangzhou, and there is no separate application channel.
· Current Status: Discontinued and merged into the 240-hour visa-free transit policy. Tourists who originally met the 72-hour policy conditions can now directly apply for the 240-hour policy, enjoying a longer stay (10 days instead of 3 days) and a wider activity scope (the entire Guangdong Province instead of a single city).
· Alternative Option: All tourists who are eligible for the original 72-hour policy (citizens of 51 countries) are included in the 55-country list of the 240-hour policy. They can apply for the 240-hour visa-free transit with the same application materials, and there is no need to add additional documents. For example, tourists from France who originally could only stay for 72 hours can now stay in Guangdong Province for 10 days.
· Notice for Historical Users: For tourists who have used the 72-hour policy before, please note that when transiting through Guangzhou after November 2025, you need to apply for the 240-hour policy. Do not mistakenly go to the 72-hour special channel (which has been cancelled), so as to avoid affecting the customs clearance efficiency.

If you have to rank the piers based on the cruise routes, it would definitely be Xidi Pier > Provincial Federation Pier > Tianzi Pier > Dashatou Pier > Haixinsha Pier, Guangzhou Tower Zhongda Pier, and Guangzhou Tower Fortune Pier. For the same price, of course, the more comprehensive the route and the more night views you see, the better! Common Misconceptions
Misconception 1: 144-Hour Visa-Free Period Counts from Arrival Time
*Fact & Details: The 144-hour (6-day) visa-free period starts at 00:00 on the day after entry, not the exact arrival time. For example:
· If you arrive at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport at 14:00 on October 1, the period begins at 00:00 on October 2 and ends at 24:00 on October 7 (6 full days).
· Overstaying even by 1 hour is considered a violation, which may lead to fines or affect future visa applications to China.
Misconception 2: All Airlines Support Through Baggage Check-in
*Fact & Details: Through baggage service is not universal. Low-cost carriers (LCCs) such as Spring Airlines (9C), Juneyao Airlines (HO), and Lucky Air (8L) usually do not provide this service.
· If you take connecting flights operated by these airlines, you must claim your luggage at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport and recheck it for the next flight.
· Tip: Confirm the baggage policy with the airline 48 hours in advance. For LCC connections, allocate an extra 40-60 minutes for luggage claim and recheck-in.
Misconception 3: 144-Hour Visa-Free Transit Only Allows Activities in Guangzhou
*Fact & Details: The 144-hour visa-free transit policy covers the entire Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (9 cities including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Zhaoqing, and Huizhou).
· Example itinerary: After entering via Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, you can travel to Shenzhen (Window of the World) or Zhuhai (Chimelong Ocean Kingdom) within the 144-hour period, as long as you depart from a designated port before the deadline.
Misconception 4: Only a Passport is Needed for Visa-Free Transit
*Fact & Details: A valid passport and a confirmed connecting ticket are mandatory. Missing either will result in entry refusal.
· Passport requirement: Valid for at least 3 months from the date of entry (some ports may require 6 months, so confirm in advance).
· Connecting ticket requirement: Must be a confirmed ticket with fixed date and seat, showing travel from "third country/region - China - another third country/region" (Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan are not considered "third countries/regions").
Misconception 5: Visa-Free Transit Allows Work or Study
*Fact & Details: The 144-hour visa-free transit only permits non-work/non-study activities such as tourism, business visits, or family visits.
· Prohibited activities: Paid work (part-time jobs, online freelance work), academic research, news interviews, or paid performances.
· Consequences: Violators may face fines, deportation, or entry bans for a certain period.

*Dietary Tips: Cantonese cuisine is light and fresh. Most scenic spot restaurants provide English menus. Inform waiters of food allergies in advance. Drink bottled or boiled water (tap water is not suitable for direct drinking).
