Your guide meets you in the lobby of your Shanghai hotel with a Your Way Holiday sign and drives you to the station for the high-speed train to Hangzhou, a ride of roughly 45 to 60 minutes that runs many times an hour. Tickets are booked for you and the guide handles the platform, so you carry only your own day bag. You reach Hangzhou East Station ready to start, and the route - lake, garden, tea village, old street - is timed to put you on an evening train home.
The first stop is West Lake, put on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2011 as a designed landscape that shaped garden design across East Asia. Your guide takes you out on a wooden boat so you see the water from the lake rather than the shore, past the causeways and the three stone pagodas that mark the deep channel. From the deck you can pick out Leifeng Pagoda on the hill while your guide sorts the lake's many legends, including the Bai Snake tale and the poet Su Dongpo who built the long Su Causeway.
On Bai Causeway stands Guo's Villa, a compact late-Qing garden laid out around 1907 by the poet Guo Xun and still called the number-one garden on West Lake. It is small - a study, a boat veranda, rockeries and a koi pond - but famous for the way Guo crammed antique stone, calligraphy, and mismatched building fragments into it. After lunch the car climbs to Meijiawu, a Longjing tea village that has grown and roasted the flat green leaf for centuries. Long drive from Shanghai to hangzhou but our guide filled the time with stories about the silk road and the southern song dynasty. Arrived at west lake just as the morning mist was lifting. She knew the best angle for photos at the broken bridge and suggested we take a rowboat instead of the big cruise ship which was so much more peaceful. Lunch at a lakeside restaurant with longjing tea shrimp. Visit to the tea plantation in the afternoon was the cherry on top.

My day trip from Shanghai to Hangzhou was everything I hoped for and more! Our guide, Autumn, made sure the experience was as smooth as possible. We started our day at Westlake, and it truly lived up to its reputation as one of China’s most iconic destinations. The highlight was Three Ponds Mirroring the Moon, where we got to enjoy the mesmerizing reflections of the surrounding landscape. Autumn gave us fantastic historical context about the lake’s importance in Chinese culture, making the view even more special.
From there, we went to Guo Garden, a peaceful escape with beautiful traditional Chinese landscaping. My short day trip to Hangzhou from Shanghai was perfectly arranged by the team, and our guide, John, was an absolute gem. We set off early in the morning, and the drive was smooth and comfortable, giving us a chance to enjoy the views along the way.
The highlight of our trip was West Lake. I had heard so much about it, but nothing compared to experiencing it firsthand. The boat ride was peaceful, and the view of the Three Ponds Mirroring the Moon was even more impressive in person. John explained the symbolism behind the scene, which really enhanced my appreciation of the landscape.We made a quick stop at Guo Garden, which was charming and offered a nice contrast to the sprawling lake. I didn’t expect to be so captivated by a garden, but the peaceful atmosphere and delicate architecture were very refreshing.The visit to Dragon Well Tea Plantation was next, and John took us through the tea fields while explaining the unique process of Longjing tea production. Even as someone who doesn’t usually drink tea, I found it fascinating and enjoyed the serenity of the plantation.We ended our journey with a walk through the Bamboo-lined Path at Yunqi, a peaceful spot that gave us some quiet time before heading back to Hefang Street for some light shopping and a taste of local snacks.
The day was packed with beauty, culture, and delicious food, all thanks to John’s smooth guiding. If you have just one day to spare, this tour is a great way to experience the essence of Hangzhou without feeling rushed.
