During the trip, a boat cruise on Westlake was made truly special by the quiet anecdotes shared; we learned which islands had inspired poets and witnessed how the light transformed on the water during the golden hour. Thanks to some insider tips, we skipped the crowds at Guo’s Villa and explored a hidden back garden, discovering ancient lotus ponds and intricately carved wooden pavilions that most visitors miss. At Meijiawu, we received a comprehensive crash course on the different grades of Dragon Well tea and, with the guide’s clear and friendly explanations, even got to pick up a bag of the spring harvest. On the Yunqi Bamboo Path, we strolled along a less-trodden stretch where the guide pointed out bamboo shoots emerging from the soil, and we paused to soak in the soothing rustle of the bamboo. At the Six Harmonies Pagoda, we climbed slowly, listening to tales of its construction, and the breathtaking top-floor view of the Qiantang River made every step of the climb worthwhile. Darcy masterfully guided us through each location at a leisurely pace; rather than feeling like we were checking off items on a list, each spot was a delightful little discovery.
