As a solo traveler in China, I wanted to make the most of my free time, so I booked a day trip from Shanghai to Suzhou. I was paired with a fantastic guide, Tom, who was easygoing and full of interesting facts about the city’s culture and history.

The day began with a visit to Lingering Garden, and I was immediately taken by the beauty of the garden’s design. The different sections felt like they each had a unique atmosphere, and Tom was happy to explain the history behind each one, which made the experience more meaningful.

Our next stop was Panmen Gate. I wasn’t expecting to be so intrigued by a city gate, but the old stonework and the surrounding defensive structures were fascinating. Tom shared the history of the gate, and I appreciated learning about Suzhou’s role in ancient China’s defense system.

After a traditional Chinese lunch, we visited Hanshan Temple, which was a peaceful escape from the busier parts of the city. I loved the quiet ambiance, and Tom’s stories about the poet Zhang Ji and the temple’s history added depth to the visit. The bell ringing was a nice touch.

The final stop was Shantang Street. I spent some time walking along the canal, enjoying the traditional architecture and little shops. It was a perfect way to end the day before heading back to Shanghai.

Overall, I highly recommend this trip for anyone looking to get away from the city for a day. Tom made everything smooth, and I learned so much about Suzhou’s history and culture in just a few hours. Perfect for a quick escape if you’re in Shanghai!
