Nearby water towns like Tongli and Zhouzhuang offer peaceful atmosphere.

First visit the Panmen City Gate. The Panmen City Gate is the oldest city gate in existence in Suzhou city with more than a 2,400 year history. It used to be one of the eight city gates during the Spring & Autumn Annals (770-476 BC) when Suzhou was the capital of the Wu Kindom. It is said to have been the only gate in China with both a lower water entrance and an upper land entrance. There are many gardens, pavilions and ponds scattered throughout the area. It is a very nice place to stroll and relax.

Then head to the Administrator's GardenIt is the largest private garden in Suzhou with a total area of 51,950 square meters (5.2 hectares) in the northeastern part of Suzhou. It has been listed as one of the four most famous national classic gardens together with the Summer Palace, Mountain Summer Resort in Chengde and Lingering Garden of Suzhou.

Your lunch will be arranged at the local restaurant popular with the local people to stay away from the tourists' meals. (At your own expense or ask your guide to recommend some other restaurants if you have special dietary needs.)

After lunch, visit the Hanshan Temple(Cold Mountain Temple) near the town of Fengqiao. Made famous in a poem by Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ji, this Buddhist temple is known for its large bells, unique black roof and domed bridge. Take a wander around its halls, pavilions, corridors and well-maintained gardens. A good place to let your mind and body rest.

Two lines of the poem reads, "outside the Suzhou City wall, I heard the sound of Hanshan Temple bell onboard the boat and felt its midnight spell". On 31 December every year, Hanshan Temple holds the event of Striking the New Year's Bell, during which the superior of the temple strike the bell 108 beats and visitors can enjoy themselves at various celebrations.

In the afternoon, drive to The No.1 Silk FactoryThere are more than 300 workers, one cocoon sorting machine, one cocoon boiling machine, two silk rewinding machines and one silk rewinding. The silk is always a famed representative of the ancient city of Suzhou, while the No.1 Silk Factory is just shinning card of the Suzhou silk. Built in 1926, the present No.1 Silk Factory of Suzhou is not only a workshop for silk reeling, weaving and products manufacture, but also a site for factory tour of silk knowledge and silk shopping.

The last stop is Tiger Hill: Known also as Surging Sea Hill, is a large hillock covering some 14100 square metres (over three acres) and is 36 metres (118 feet) in height. Climbing the hill, you will find a number of historical sites some of which can be traced back over 2500 years to the founding of Suzhou. Although the hill is relatively small it has rich history. These are just some of the highlights of what is to be found there.

Well organised and a fun Suzhou private tour from Shanghai

Tommy, our tour guide was a wonderful, attentive and engaging person. He was thorough in ensuring we had everything organised regarding the train travel. Tommy also found a wonderful vegetarian restaurant for our lunch, He managed the time well to ensure everything fit in without rushing. We also laughed heaps which added to the day, It was great to catch a fast train (ie avoid the traffic) to Suzhou travelling through the countryside and passing a number of cities. Highly recommend Tommy and this day trip from Shanghai.

Amazing private tour to Suzhou from Shanghai

We had a great time on the one day private Suzhou tour from Shanghai. Shanghai Private Tour emailed us information in advance and Johnny was a fantastic tour guide. He picked us up from our hotel and we got the bullet train to Suzhou together. He told us lots of interesting information about Shanghai and the Chinese culture on the way and he knew a great deal of history about the sites we went to. He was really friendly and answered all our questions. I would highly recommend this trip and Shanghai Private Tour

A pleasant trip to Suzhou from Shanghai

Sam from Shanghai Private Tour was very helpful and diligent when we communicated to finalise our trip details. We were picked up from our hotel by private car. Our guide Johnny waited for us at the high speed train station.I had a lovely private day tour of Suzhou. He was very pleasant and shared lots of information about the history, traditions, and the life of people in these towns. His English was superb. Not to mention, I felt very safe as a woman traveling alone. Suzhou was a breathtaking places to visit. Its a far cry from the busy, and crowded Shanghai. Anyone who loves Venice, would in deed love and enjoy Suzhou. I would recommend anyone visiting Shanghai to do this tour (and the Gondola ride) !

Amazing Suzhou Day Tour from Shanghai with fantastic guide Jonny

I've been to Shanghai many times and have seen what there is to see. On this business trip I had a day to do something different. I decided to book with Shanghai Private Tour because of the fast response. I decided I wanted to spend the day at Suzhou rather than being in a car for hours getting there. Although it was not inexpensive I picked the private day trip via high speed train. It took about 25 minutes from Shanghai to Suzhou. Johnny picked me up from my hotel right on time and off we went to the train station. He was very pleasant and shared lots of information about the history, traditions, and the life of people in these towns. His English was superb. Not to mention, I felt very safe as a woman traveling alone. We had a great lunch at an authentic restaurant. The fish dish I had was spicy....like numb your mouth spicy. It was great! I visited PANGate, Master Net Garden, lunch on Peingjing Road. We wandered around this road and then walked the beautiful canal area. I would recommend anyone visiting Shanghai to do this tour (and the Gondola ride) !..Shanghai Private Tour and Jonny are the BEST!
